Many folks are at groceries stores frantically making last-minute Thanksgiving purchases including wine — preferably from the U.S. — to accompany their holiday feasts. If you’re one of them, consider choosing food-friendly wines that will go with a variety of dishes rather than those that pair with just a certain type of fare. Plan to have both white and red wines, but try to avoid those that are too tannic, too oaky and too high in alcohol. Here are two suggestions from Oregon and California.
A to Z Wineworks 2019 Pinot Gris, Oregon

Description • Pinot gris is actually the same grape as pinot grigio, but sometimes U.S. wineries use the pinot gris name to indicate the wine was made in a richer, Alsatian style rather than a lighter-bodied Italian white. That is certainly the case with the A to Z pinot gris, which received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast. This is an aromatic, medium-bodied white that has a lush mouthfeel and long finish. Dry, but not bone dry, it tastes of ripe sweet peaches and pears along with some refreshing citrus and a touch of bakery spice.
William Hill 2018 Merlot, Central Coast, CaliforniaBought • Dierbergs, 8450 Eager Road, in November for $14.99
Description • If you haven’t tasted a good merlot in a long time, give the William Hill a try. Although merlot tends to produce reds that are softer than cabernet sauvignon, this one is definitely on the richer side with mild to moderate tannins. A beautifully balanced, medium-bodied red, it has an inviting aroma that makes you want to take a sip. This is a complex red that’s a little herbaceous and tastes of black cherries, blackberries and plums with delicious hints of chocolate, caramel and toasted oak. It ends with a long, silky finish.
