Grocery store wine aisles can be overwhelming, especially if you’re in a rush to buy a few bottles for Thursday’s Thanksgiving feast. In the spirit of the American holiday, one way to narrow your search is to stick to domestic wines. Look for fruity, food-friendly reds with moderate body and soft tannins that will complement rather than overwhelm the turkey. For whites, choose bigger, aromatic styles that will stand up to the richness of the meal. Below are two affordable examples from the Pacific Northwest.

The Great Oregon Wine Co. 2018 Rascal, Pinot Gris, Oregon

Description • The Great Oregon Wine Co. is a supporter of the Humane Society, and its Rascal brand features a dog with a halo on its label. Its pinot gris is a rich, honeyed white with a mouthcoating texture. Bordering on off-dry, it’s an aromatic wine that tastes of juicy fresh peaches and other stone fruits along with bakery spice. It would pair well with turkey and side dishes and is also a good choice for guests who prefer their wines just a little sweet.

Sagelands Vineyard 2017 Riverbed Red, Columbia Valley, Washington

Description • Fruit-forward and easy to drink, this is a crowd-pleasing red with silky tannins. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot with a touch of syrah, it’s a medium-bodied wine that’s soft, well-balanced and will not overpower the turkey. It also has great flavors for Thanksgiving: ripe cherries, cranberries and other red fruit along with subtle notes of oak, vanilla and spice. A versatile red for any time of year, it would go with many foods including pasta and burgers.
