Gear • Folding wagons

Little red wagon 2014

Collapsible wagons can come in handy on a walk when you're tired of hauling backpacks.

What • Outdoorsy wagons that can fold to a size that fits in a car trunk with room to spare.

How much • $40 to $100.

Where to buy • On Google or Bing, search “folding wagons,” or “collapsible wagons.”

Why buy it • As time marches on, a day-hiker’s backpack gets heavier. On St. Louis area trails, pulling a cart works well on or off pavement. Haul extra water, that heavy camera gear, the picnic basket, collapsible chairs, even firewood. Canvas sides are lightweight. Gadget Guru’s advice: Shop. Every store and online site had different manufacturers, sizes and durability. The prices differ for those reasons. They’re not suited for rough terrain or bushwhacking. For that, search “deer carts” designed for hunters.
