Walls that had enclosed the kitchen were removed to open the area and allow space for a 12-foot-by-4-foot quartz island with peninsula seating on three sides at one end. Stained solid maple kitchen cabinets were selected for their clean lines and hidden drawer handles and were painted in a gray-blue hue that allows the new stainless steel appliances to blend perfectly. The double doors visible in the kitchen replaced a single slab door for more light and an improved view out on the back yard

Whimsical dachshund sculptures by St. Louis artist Steve Jones show the affection the couple have for the dachshund breed of dog. In addition to rescue litter sisters Lexi and Flo, a Schnauzer and Chihuahua mix, the couple have Charlie, a 14-year old light tan dachshund.

The primary bath was gutted and rebuilt with a contemporary design that includes a spacious walk-in shower and cabinets finished with a high gloss enamel-type glaze.

The lower level has been turned into an exercise room. Unseen is the décor that features a Florida theme in photos and displayed art from the five years they had retired and moved to the state.

The great room, kitchen and primary bath were stripped to the studs, and after five months a new house took shape inside the old exterior.
