• Keep your hoe sharp and don’t allow weeds to get an early start in your garden.

Seed ticks are active now. Be sure to apply repellent when walking or working in the woods.

• Birds eat many insect pests. Provide a varied mix of trees and shrubs to attract them to your garden.

• Nectar feeders hung now may attract migrating ruby-throated hummingbirds to visit your garden.

• Sow seeds of luffa and hard-shell gourds indoors in peat pots. Soak seeds overnight to improve germination. Plant outdoors next month.

• Plant raspberries and blackberries for low-maintenance, high-yielding fruit crops.

How much time do you spend foraging for your keys? Ever had to rely on the extra set you hid away? You may be a good candidate for a key-free door access lock pad that offers the security of a keyed lock with the convenience of using a digital code to open the door.

Q: Tim, I’ve got several plumbing repairs to make, and I just don’t have the money to hire a plumber. The water in my bathroom vanity sink drains slower than molasses. Just a year ago it drained really fast. Sometimes my toilet gets clogged, and I think it’s disgusting to use a plunger. Is there another way to unclog a toilet? Lastly, my shower head used to have a nice spray pattern, but now water doesn’t come out evenly and the pressure is reduced. Is there an easy repair for this? —Carol F., Spokane, Wash.
