SAN DIEGO - A toddler has been mauled to death by his family's dog in their home in a San Diego military housing area.

San Diego police say the 2-year-old boy was attacked in an upstairs bedroom Saturday front of some or all of his three 3- to 7-year old siblings while their mother was downstairs. The boy's father is a serviceman deployed overseas.

Police Lt. Rick O'Hanlon says investigators do not know what provoked the animal to attack the child.

He says there were no known previous problems with the 1½ year old shepherd mix that the family had owned for about six months.

Police say the dog has been secured and will be taken away by animal control officers.
