'Let them stand a thousand years:' 128 years since fire left only the iconic columns standing at Mizzou

On Jan. 9, 1892, a fire tore through Academic Hall, the crown jewel of what was then known as Missouri State University in Columbia, Mo., leaving little in its wake except the six iconic columns that still stand on Mizzou's campus. Shortly after the fire, G.F. Rothwell, president of the university's board of curators, famously said, “Let these columns stand. Let them stand a thousand years."
