HOORAY FOR CARL'S: Carl's Drive In at 9033 Manchester Road (corner of High School Drive) in Brentwood has been named one of the “Top 10 U.S. Burger Joints” by MSN.
Brentwood’s own Frank Cunnetto has been running Carl’s for 20+ years. So, why is it called Carl’s if Frank owns it and runs it? A lunchtime call to the busy drive in results in a woman telling this colyumnist that Cunnetto is too busy to come to the phone and that I should call back after 3.
Doesn’t matter what the restaurant is called because customers are willing to stand in line for the burgers and the frosty mugs of homemade root beer. According to MSN, Cunnetto says the secret to a great burger is getting it from the grill to the customer as quickly as possible.
Not a problem at Carl’s, where the few stools that surround the restaurant’s counter practically have customers sitting on top of the grill. As MSN wrote on its website: “Topnotch flat-grilled hamburgers worth waiting for in this wee spot.”
Former Brentwood resident Ed Meyer wrote in an email that he gives Cunnetto an "A++ for being able to keep an old food service business plan like this viable against impossible competition and bad economic times … if there was a ‘Food Service Hall of Fame’ Frank would be voted in it the first round by those who know just how much he's accomplished against such difficult odds."
