MARYLAND HEIGHTS • A woman hired off of Craigslist to work as an accountant for a Maryland Heights firm worked there for just one day, but bilked the company out of nearly $15,000 over the following months, police say.
St. Louis County prosecutors last week charged Angela Renee Phan with identity theft, a felony. Phan, 35, lives in the 6600 block of Devonshire Avenue in St. Louis. Her bail was set at $50,000.
Charges say she stole money from the bank account of Triplematic Dispensers, at 2024 Congressional Drive in Maryland Heights, between July 1, 2014, and Dec. 6, 2015.
Phan had worked for the company for one day as an accountant, hired off of Craigslist, Maryland Heights Police Officer Shane Monnig said in court papers. The documents do not explain why she worked only one day. The company mailed her a paycheck for that one day of work. The company's account and routing numbers were on the check she received.

The company later noticed several unauthorized transactions had been made on the business checking account. The company's bank said at least one of the transactions was made to an account connected to Phan.
Police say Phan confessed that she used the numbers from the check to make fraudulent transactions totalling $14,720.
