FLORISSANT  •  A health-care provider has been charged with abuse after he allegedly beat a man for defecating and urinating in a car.

St. Louis County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Daniel G. Bonner, 23, of St. Louis, with third-degree abuse of a vulnerable person, a misdemeanor.

The victim is a 49-year-old man who suffers from mild retardation, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He lives in a group home on Fremont Court in Florissant.

On Sept. 20, police say, Bonner took the man to the St. Louis Outlet Mall in Hazelwood. On the trip back to the group home, the man defecated and urinated on himself while riding in the car, said Florissant Police Officer Andy Haarmann.

When Bonner got back to the group home, he undressed the man, cleaned him off and struck him at least two times with a belt, Haarmann said. The belt caused some bruises and scrapes. Police characterized the injuries as minor.

The next day, the victim was having lunch with his brother and showed him his injuries and told him about the attack. The brother took the victim to Christian Hospital, and a police investigation began.

Bonner admitted to police what had happened, authorities said. He was arrested and subsequently fired from his job at Preferred Alternatives of Missouri Inc., Haarmann said.

"He was regretful that it happened," Haarmann said.

Police found no indications of any other abuse.

Bonner lives in the 1200 block of Redd Foxx Lane.
