ALTON • An Alton Middle School teacher was charged Monday after a woman told authorities that she and the man engaged sexually when the woman was younger than 17 and the man was a middle school teacher, from September 1998 until July 2000.
William C. Ingersoll, 51, was charged by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He was arrested and held on $250,000 in bail, but a family member posted $25,000 in cash later that day.
The woman initially came forward about the assault in the fall of 2018 to a trusted former high school teacher, who alerted school district officials, who then alerted authorities. Alton police conducted multiple interviews and executed a search warrant.
Police do not have information indicating that other victims exist, but if there are any other victims, they are encouraged to speak with the Alton Police Department.
"The courage and tenacity it took for this young woman to come forward and demand attention be paid to her case is exceptional," Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons said. "It is my hope that the dedicated, professional work displayed by Detective (Joseph) Splittorff and the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office in this case will be able to bring her the justice she deserves.”
