Plastic bag robber

Surveillance images show a man who wore a plastic bag over his head when he robbed a convenience store in Belleville early on Friday, July 25, 2014.

EAST ST. LOUIS • A Belleville man with an extensive criminal history was sentenced to just over 15 and a half years in prison for robbing a gas station in Belleville in 2014.

Patrick S. McGuire, 49, was sentenced in federal court in East St. Louis on Monday.

Authorities say McGuire robbed the Circle K gas station at 421 South Belt East on July 25. Officials said he went into the gas station early that morning with a plastic bag on his head and a plastic bag covering a pointed object in his hand and demanded money from the clerk, who was alone. He got about $60 from the robbery, officials said, and had been probation for less than two weeks for a 2013 felony.

McGuire has 14 previous felony convictions and more than 30 misdemeanor conviction. United States District Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel said that the criminal history was “the most extensive criminal history I have seen.”

Upon sentencing, she said, “I don't think I've seen a case where there's a stronger need to protect the public.”
