ST. LOUIS COUNTY • The body of a man who disappeared while swimming in the Meramec River near Buder Park on Sunday has been found.

An autopsy Tuesday showed his cause of death was drowning, according to St. Louis County police.

Matthew Kirk, 27, disappeared after sending a text to a friend about 6:20 p.m. Sunday saying that he was swimming. St. Louis County police were called about 9:20 p.m. when family and friends couldn't reach Kirk.

Authorities searched the area with boats, ATVs, police dogs and a helicopter but were unable to find him.

His body was found about 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Meramec near Marshall Road, about a half mile from where he was last seen, police said.

Kirk lived in the 2100 block of Palatine Court, south across Interstate 44 from where he was last seen.
