ST. LOUIS • Firefighters recovered a body from the Mississippi River on Friday morning.

The body was spotted Thursday evening by a towboat worker, just south of the Poplar Street Bridge.

But the recovery effort was postponed until Friday morning. The body was caught up in river debris on the Illinois side of the river, and workers had to move barges in order for firefighters from the department's Marine Unit Task Force to get to it, officials said.

They did that on Friday morning, once they had additional equipment and there was less river traffic.

Officials could not immediately determine the gender of the body or how long it had been in the water.
