ST. LOUIS  •  Police say a 5-year-old St. Louis boy who was shot in the chest and wounded Saturday may have been shot by a 4-year-old.

The injured boy was stable at a hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest, police say. His name has not been released.

He was shot at about 7 a.m. Saturday inside a home in the 2800 block of Stoddard Street.

The boy's mother and her boyfriend apparently tried to lie about the shooting at first. Police say they said the child was playing outside when they heard a gunshot and found him injured.

But police soon discovered that the child was inside the home when he was shot, possibly by a 4-year-old child.

Police say the firearm had been unsecured, and child-abuse authorities are investigating. Charges of endangering the welfare of a child could be filed against the mother, 24, and her boyfriend, 25.
