ST. LOUIS • A 45-year-old father trying to break up a fist fight between his two adult sons on Christmas morning shot one of them in self-defense, police say.

The shooting happened around 9:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of McLaran Avenue in the Baden neighborhood. As the father tried to get between his two sons, one of them pulled out a handgun and shot at his father but missed, according to police.

The father pulled out his own handgun and shot his 25-year-old son four times, twice in the abdomen and twice in the right leg. The 25-year-old was taken to a hospital and listed in critical but stable condition. Multiple witnesses confirmed the father's account of the incident, police said.

The police department's domestic abuse response team is handling the investigation.
