WELDON SPRING • A driver who allegedly caused a fatal crash as he was fleeing police was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter and resisting arrest.
Aron J. Richardson, 36, of Union, had been pulled over by a St. Charles County Police officer on Saturday afternoon near Highway 94 and Independence Road but fled the scene to avoid arrest on active warrants, police said.
As Richardson's SUV was westbound on Highway 94 at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light at Cedar Glen Drive, hitting a car trying to make a left turn, police said. The crash killed the driver of that car, Krystofer M. Batsell, 21, of St. Charles County. It also left a passenger in Richardson's SUV with moderate injuries.
A spokeswoman for the St. Charles County Police Department said Richardson fled a traffic stop. He knew or should have known he was likely to be arrested for active warrants and sped off to evade arrest, charges say. Richardson failed to stop for marked police vehicles with emergency lights and sirens, the court documents say.
Richardson had been arrested by the Missouri Highway Patrol in March on gun and drug charges, according to online court records.
He was jailed Monday with bail set at $100,000, cash only, court documents say. The St. Charles County jail on Tuesday morning said a mugshot of Richardson was not yet available.
