FESTUS • A 63-year-old man told police he fatally shot his 29-year-old son early Monday after he interrupted his son choking his mother on the floor of their home.
Officers were called to the 100 block of Olive Street at about 3:45 a.m. for a domestic disturbance. Once there, they found the couple's son dead from gunshot wounds, said Festus Police Capt. Doug Wendel.
The dead man's father told police his son had been drinking heavily earlier in the night. He said he found his son on top of his mother, choking her. The father said he struck his son in the back of his head with the butt of a revolver.
"The son then released the mother and threw the father across the room and threatened his life," Wendel said. "He said something about how, 'Now you messed up,' threatened his life and advanced on the father, and the father shot him."
The man fired a "couple rounds" at his son, Wendel said.
Police arrested and booked the man on suspicion of murder, but he has been released pending application of warrants with the prosecutor's office, Wendel said.
"This is pretty much a quiet area of town," Wendel said. "It's a tragic incident for all involved."
Police found some minor injuries to the dead man's mother, and believe the son lived in the home with his parents, Wendel said.
Wendel would not release the name of the man who died, nor the name of the man police arrested.
