GLEN CARBON • An Illinois State Police trooper shot and killed a man near Staunton after he led police on a chase from Glen Carbon where he was suspected of a carjacking.

Illinois State Police were called around 3:45 p.m. Saturday with reports of an armed carjacking and shots fired near the Sam's Club in Glen Carbon, near Illini Drive and Troy Road. State police pursued the suspect vehicle north on Interstate 55 until it ran off the road near Staunton, about 30 miles to the north.

The suspect got out and fled on foot, and the state trooper pursued. The suspect had a gun and fired at the trooper, who returned fire, striking and killing the suspect, said Illinois State Police District 11 Commander William Guard.

“The suspect had no identification on his person and remains unidentified at this time,” Guard said.

The 36-year-old trooper, an 11-year state police veteran, was also struck and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
