MONROE COUNTY • Authorities are investigating the death of a St. Louis man found unconscious in a Monroe County jail cell.

The man, 39, was found about 9:30 a.m. Monday. He was taken to St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis County, where he died.

Monroe County authorities had not identified the man Tuesday night.

He was being held at the Monroe County Jail by Waterloo police on "various charges and a warrant for his arrest out of Missouri," the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said in a press release.

An autopsy was conducted but authorities said the man's cause of death was pending toxicology tests. Illinois State Police was investigating.
