UNIVERSITY CITY • Police were looking Tuesday for a gunman who killed his mother, Donna Washington, 55, while breaking into her home, then wounded a responding police officer.
The man, climbing through a bedroom window of the home in the 7400 block of Wayne Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday, fired a shot that hit the woman in her leg, Detective Sgt. Fredrick Lemons said in a news release. She died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
The attacker shot at three University City police officers responding to a call for the home invasion, Lemons said. One of them, a five-year veteran of the department, was hit in the chest and hospitalized in serious condition.
Police returned gunfire, but Lemons said it was unclear if the man, who ran off through back yards, had been hit. He was last seen near Midland Avenue.
Police did not provide the name of the suspect or the wounded officer.
St. Louis County police had said Monday night that the officer had been shot in the arm, but University City police provided updated information Tuesday morning.
Officials do not believe the shooting was connected to violence that erupted miles away Monday night after the announcement that Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson would not be charged in the fatal shooting Aug. 9 of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
