MOSCOW MILLS • This afternoon, firefighters from the Lincoln County Fire Protection District rescued a man who had fallen into the near-freezing waters of the Cuivre River in Moscow Mills and was unable to climb back up the steep, muddy riverbank.
The man, who appeared elderly but whose name and hometown was unavailable, told rescuers that he had tried to sit down at the top of the river bank but slipped and fell about 25 feet, landing in the water. A family member found him sometime later, but it was unknown how long he was in the water.
When firefighters arrived, the man was waist-deep in the water. Firefighters threw a life jacket to the man who was shivering, but able to put it on. The firefighters descended the river bank with the help of ropes and pulled the man back up the bank. He was treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
"Believe me, the bank was so steep and muddy, I don't know how anybody could have climbed up on that thing," said Barry Nuss, spokesperson for the district.
Nuss added that the man was in good spirits and walked to the ambulance with some help.
