A man was gunned down outside his apartment building Monday evening.

The man was identified as Aaron D. Prayer, 21, of the 400 block of Wimmer Place in East St. Louis. Prayer died of a gunshot wound to his chest, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Dye said Prayer was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:05 p.m.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Craig Nolan said the agency is assisting East St. Louis in the homicide investigation. Police arrived on the scene at 7:36 p.m. after getting a call that a man was down following a shooting, Nolan said.

Nolan said Prayer was shot outside the middle of three apartment buildings where several other people were hanging out. He said they have no motive at this time or suspects. The homicide marks the second this year near Alpha Plaza apartments.

Authorities asked anyone with information to call Illinois State Police at 618-346-3990 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
