Man sentenced to 80 years in prison in Madison murder case

MADISON • A man was sentenced Wednesday to 80 years in prison for the shooting death of Robert L. Gilmore, 41, who was killed near the intersection of Fourth Street and Washington Avenue on Nov. 13, 2017.

Kevin D. Gardner, 28, was found guilty of first-degree murder earlier this year in Madison County Circuit Court. The jury rejected Gardner's claim that he had shot Gilmore in self defense.

Gilmore was found dead inside a car at about 7 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2017, the car having apparently rolled to a stop in the front yard of a home. The prosecution presented evidence indicating that Gardner fired six shots at Gilmore as the victim drove down the street.

Gardner will be required to serve 100% of his sentence.
