PINE LAWN — Theda Person will be among those commemorating what would have been her son's 26th birthday today during a candlelight vigil at the site where his home once stood.
Organizers are encouraging friends, family and supporters to bring teddy bears, flowers, balloons and angels to add to a memorial that is forming at the site, 3720 Sylvan Place. Tonight's vigil is set for 6:30 p.m.
Christian, who was 9 when he vanished, had a rare disorder that prevented his body from processing protein. He couldn’t walk or talk. He would have died within 48 hours without proper medication, court documents say.
St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell charged Christian's father Friday in the child’s presumed death.
Prosecutors say Dawan Ferguson, 46, caused the death of his son in 2003. He's been charged with one count of first-degree murder and is being held without bail.
Theda Person said she is pleased, yet cautious about the charges.
"In my mind something should have been a done long time ago," she said. "I just don't want to be let down. But I trust that this is it and that the truth will come out."
She said she hopes her story will help other people.
"I'm hoping that this case will make people think about how they handle cases in court, how they advocate for people, how law enforcement goes about protecting and serving and what they all could have done differently and what can they do if they have a case similar to mine," she said.
