ST. LOUIS • Nearly two years after a St. Louis man was shot and killed, the man charged in his slaying has had the charges dismissed.
Brandon Jones, 27, had been set for trial this week in St. Louis on charges of first-degree murder and other counts. Jones was accused of fatally shooting Cortez B. Rucker, 27, of the 5000 Block of Ruskin Avenue.
Rucker was found lying near a vehicle with several gunshots wounds early Dec. 3, 2017, in the 4700 block of Genevieve Avenue, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case was dismissed Sept. 30 for lack of witness cooperation, said a spokeswoman for Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner.
Jones' lawyer, Chris Schmidt, said DNA evidence excluded Jones from the crime scene and identified another "unknown individual" at the scene.
"There was really no good evidence tying our client to this scene," Schmidt said.
