ST. LOUIS – Police said a man who died in a crash Saturday had fled police first.
The crash was reported about 6 p.m. at North Grand Boulevard and Cass Avenue. Prior to the crash, police saw a man standing with a bag that appeared to be holding a weapon, police said. The man spotted the marked police car and got in the passenger side of a silver Dodge Charger. Officers walked toward the car and told the passenger to show his hands. He refused the command. The driver sped away as the officers ordered him to stop.
Other officers in the area put down a spike strip that deflated the man's tires but the Charger continued south on 15th Street toward Cass Avenue. The Charger then hit a tree in the 3600 block of Cass. The driver, whose identity was not yet clear, was killed in the crash.
Two passengers, a 26-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy, were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. A handgun was recovered from the car. The investigation is ongoing.
