ST. LOUIS • Police now say a man struck by two vehicles that fled the crash scene as he was crossing South Broadway in St. Louis early Sunday is in critical condition at a hospital.
Police had previously reported in error that the victim had died.
Bapi Gupta, 50, was crossing South Broadway near Cerre Street, just south of Busch Stadium, when he was struck by the two vehicles at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
He was initially hit by a black Mercedes driven by a woman driving "at a high rate of speed," according to police. A maroon vehicle behind the Mercedes also struck the man.
Both vehicles left the scene.
A fund-raising page has been established to ask for money to help with Gupta's medical bills.
At least a dozen pedestrians have been fatally struck on St. Louis city streets in 2015, compared with five in all of last year.
