UPDATED Friday morning with name of victim, arrest of suspect
SPANISH LAKE — A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday night in north St. Louis County, according to Sgt. Benjamin Granda of the county police.
The victim is identified as Clifford Swan III. He lived in the 4200 block of Christus Court in north St. Louis County.
Police early Friday said they have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected in the killing. The suspect's name has not been released. Detectives will be seeking charges Friday.
The shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday near the 11100 block of Oak Parkway Lane, Granda said.
Investigators said the boy was walking through an apartment complex with two friends or relatives. Several gunshots were heard, and the victim was struck once.
Police said the shooting does not appear random. Granda said Friday that investigators think Clifford was the intended target and that the shooting may have stemmed from a previous altercation or dispute.
Clifford's grandmother, reached by phone Friday, said she was too distraught to talk about the boy.
After the shooting, a small crowd formed at the scene and was acting disruptively as police tried to investigate, police said.
A woman who lives in the apartment complex, Renita Graves, said she was on the phone and heard six gunshots, followed by several screams. She said she saw the boy's body on the ground when she went to see what had happened. Police were still on the scene at 10:30 p.m., she said.
Earlier Thursday, 3-year-old Rodney March III died of a gunshot wound suffered at his home in North County. Police believe he found a gun in a bedroom at his family’s apartment.
