VINITA PARK • The Major Case Squad has unraveled some of the mystery about the deaths of a man and woman killed in Vinita Park on Sunday.
Investigators believe that Vernon Stewart Jr. fatally shot Tashonda Nesbitt, who lived with him at the home, then a third person shot and killed Stewart.
That is the scenario presented by the Major Case Squad as it wraps up its investigation. The person who fatally shot Stewart is cooperating with detectives.
Olivette Police Lt. David Wolf, who is a spokesman for the Major Case Squad, would not provide any details about that third person in the home except to say it is an adult who felt threatened by Stewart. Wolf also wouldn't say if that person has been arrested.
Police were called to the home in the 2100 block of Penfield Avenue at about 1 a.m. Sunday. Stewart and Nesbitt were found dead inside. They lived together at the home and had a relationship, but Wolf didn't say what their relationship was.
Stewart shot Nesbitt in a domestic quarrel; Wolf didn't say what they were fighting about.
The North County Police Cooperative asked the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to investigate the case.
Wolf said investigators plan to turn over their findings to St. Louis County prosecutors, who will decide if the third person in the home will face any charges.
