St. Louis County Police Officer Kathy Kelly won the National 2012 DARE Officer of the Year award on Wednesday in Atlanta.

Kelly, 56, has been with the St. Louis County Police Department since 1985. She became a DARE officer in 1991. DARE is Drug Abuse Resistance Education, a program that targets students.

In winning the national award, Kelly was selected from a pool of 50 candidates — one from each state. The Missouri Police Chiefs Association and the Missouri and regional chapters of DARE nominated her.
