UPDATED with autopys scheduled
ST. LOUIS • Firefighters recovered a body from the Mississippi River on Thursday morning.
The Illinois State Police will be investigating the death.
St. Louis Fire Capt. Garon Mosby said a towboat captain called Wednesday night after spotting what appeared to be a woman's body in the river, not far from the McKinley Bridge.
Authorities couldn't reach the body at first because barges were in the way. The barges were moved Thursday morning and the body was recovered, Mosby said.
The St. Clair County coroner's office took custody of the body, and an investigator said the body was that of a man, not a woman.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Thursday, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Chris Hofstot.
The man's body was recovered just north of the Martin Luther King Bridge, he said.
Anyone with information about any missing persons were asked to call the Illinois State Police at 618-346-3768.
