UPDATED at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday with charges against neighbor

ST. LOUIS • A 7-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the buttocks Tuesday night after his downstairs neighbor, who appeared to be drunk, was handling a gun when it discharged, police say.

The neighbor, Jeffery Eckstein, 29, was charged Wednesday with second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

The bullet went through the ceiling and into apartment where the boy lived. The boy was treated at a hospital and was stable, police say. His condition was unavailable Wednesday.

The shooting was about 9:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of South Grand Boulevard, in the Dutchtown neighborhood.

Police arrested the neighbor shortly after the incident. He was being held on $50,000 cash-only bail.
