EAST ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis teenager has been charged after police say he shot two teenagers, one of them fatally, at an East St. Louis housing complex on June 11.

Jemmane Whitehead Jr., 17, was charged Wednesday in St. Clair County Circuit Court with murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.

Anton M. McDaniels, 14, an outfielder with an East St. Louis boys club baseball team called the Red Rockies, was walking home after a game when he and a 16-year-old boy were shot. It happened in the Roosevelt Homes public housing complex, where McDaniels lived.

McDaniels died three days after the shooting. The other boy is recovering.

Police had released few details about the shooting. It was not clear whether the boys were the intended targets, but Anton's parents said they thought they were caught in crossfire from other young teens running through the complex and playing with guns.

His father, Anton T. McDaniels, 43, of St. Louis, said his son also lived with him and that he was a straight-A student at Fanning Middle School in St. Louis. He was also accepted to South City Preparatory, a public charter school, for the fall. His son dreamed of playing baseball in Busch Stadium, he said.
