ST. LOUIS • Police have identified a man gunned down in St. Louis on Saturday, the 199th homicide victim of the year in the city.
Dwyone Mason, 34, was found shot to death at North Newstead and Ashland avenues about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds at the scene, in the city's Greater Ville neighborhood.
Police did not have a detailed description of the gunman. There was no word on motive.
Mason lived in the 4500 block of Aubert Avenue. Authorities asked anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477.
The 199 homicides so far this year already tops the total for each year since 1995, when there were 204. The modern high was 267 homicides in 1993.
There were 188 homicides in all of 2016. This year, the city reached that number the day after Thanksgiving.
Homicides are also up in St. Louis County, though a total wasn't immediately available.
