WELDON SPRING • A St. Charles County man was killed Saturday afternoon when his car was struck by an SUV pursued by county police officers, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.
The victim was Krystofer M. Batsell, 21, the patrol said. The crash was about 4:20 p.m. at westbound Highway 94 and Cedar Glen Drive, the patrol said.
The patrol said Batsell was attempting a left turn onto 94 when the front of the fleeing SUV struck Batsell’s car. The patrol said Batsell was taken to Progress West Hospital in nearby O’Fallon, where he was pronounced dead.
The other driver, Aron J. Richardson, 36, of Union, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles with what the patrol said was a minor injury. Also taken to St. Joseph was a passenger in Richardson’s vehicle, Erika N. Ward, 30, of Union. She had a moderate injury, the patrol said.
The patrol didn't say why Richardson's vehicle was pursued by police.
A spokeswoman for the St. Charles County Police Department said an officer conducted a traffic stop near Highway 94 and Independence Road. The driver fled the scene and crashed into the victim's car, police said. St. Charles County police did not identify the driver, but said he had been taken into custody. Online records say Richardson is in the St. Charles County Jail.
Police are investigating the initial traffic stop and the crash, police said.
Richardson was arrested by the Missouri Highway Patrol in March on gun and drug charges, according to online court records.
