WENTZVILLE  •  State social services and police officials are investigating after a toddler was found wandering around outside at an apartment complex in Wentzville this morning, wearing nothing but a turtleneck, one sock and a diaper.

The toddler was examined by emergency officials and was not hurt, Wentzville Police Maj. Paul West said. Police refused to give the toddler's gender or exact age but said the child was under two years old.

The incident happened at the Peine Lakes apartment complex, at Highways P and 61. They are unsure how long the toddler was alone outside but did know an older sibling left for school at about 7:30 a.m. and the toddler was later found rattling a neighbor's door handle. Police got the call at 8:09 a.m. The temperature in the area around that time was 39 degrees.

The child's mother was inside their apartment, sleeping. Police arrested her but she was released pending the investigation.
