A woman was found fatally shot early Sunday in the 100 block of Mann Street in south St. Louis County, police said.

Police were called to the scene at 1:50 a.m. and found the body of Wendy Hall-Onkle, 40, of the 900 block of Dammert Avenue in the Lemay area of South County.

A suspect, who family members said was Onkle's husband's niece, was taken into custody at the scene. Police said only that Hall-Onkle and the suspect knew each other and there are no other suspects in this case.

Police did not release a potential motive in the fatal shooting.

Hall-Onkle is known to readers of stltoday.com from an article about her 7-year-old son, Alex, who battled brain cancer and died last April.

Hall-Onkle's sister, Pam Incerta, said her family is grieving and she knows her sister would not want her death to overshadow the Alex Onkle Financial Support Foundation they set up in memory of Alex and to raise money to help families dealing with childhood cancer.

She also said her family is not showing any hatred for what has happened.

"We just have to let the system do what it has to do," she said. "This was very senseless and very traumatic thing that affects both families. I'm numb. We don't know the all the facts."
