Citing unsafe conditions in north St. Louis County, officials with the Jennings school district delayed the first day of school from today to tomorrow.

“Safety is our uppermost concern,” a notice to parents said. “At this time we do not feel it's safe for our students to walk to school.”

The Jennings school district borders parts of Ferguson and West Florissant Avenue where where rioting and looting took place Sunday into early this morning. District officials notified parents by phone and texts early this morning.

“We do look forward to having a safe and peaceful welcome back on Tuesday,” the notice said. “We will be keeping all involved in the tragedy that has sparked recent events in our thoughts and prayers.”

Officials with the Ferguson-Florissant School District were also meeting this morning to discuss whether eight meet the teachers nights would go on this evening at elementary schools. The district is scheduled to start classes on Thursday.
