ST. LOUIS   •   The four candidates for Missouri's Eighth Congressional District will face off in a debate May 28 at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

Republican state Rep. Jason Smith, Democratic state Rep. Steve Hodges, Constitution Party candidate Doug Enyart and Bill Slantz of the Libertarian Party are slated to participate, according to the Southeast Missourian, co-sponsor of the event.

The 90-minute debate is also sponsored by the university and by KFVS-TV 12. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Shuck Recital Hall on the campus.

It will be broadcast on KFVS12 and stream online atsemissourian.com.

The moderator will be Southeast professor emeritus Tom Harte. Jeff Cunningham of KFVS and Southeast Missourian editor Bob Miller will be panelists.

The congressional seat, which takes in a wide swath of southern Missouri, was vacated by former U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., earlier this year. She left after 17 years to head the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The special election to replace her is set for June 4.
