Two major highway shutdowns, one in Missouri and one in Illinois, could snarl traffic this weekend.
All eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 44 will close at Interstate 270 in Sunset Hills this weekend for work on the Watson Road bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation said Monday.
And a 10-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 55/70 will close in Madison County, from Illinois Route 111 in Fairmont City to U.S. 40 in Troy, Illinois. Illinois transportation officials said they were placing an asphalt surface treatment.
Both closures begin at 7 p.m. Friday and will end by the Monday morning traffic rush.
Affected in the Missouri closure is a segment of I-44 between I-270 and Geyer Road.
That work, which includes bridge girder painting, will allow crews to accelerate construction enough to be able to open the bridge by the end of September, one month early, MoDOT said in a news release.
During the interstate closure, drivers will still be able to get from I-44 to I-270 in both directions, as well as to eastbound Watson (Missouri Route 366). Detours will be marked. The closed segment will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
To get around the Madison County closure, through traffic will be directed by posted detours to take eastbound I-64 to northbound I-255 to eastbound I-270 to gain access to eastbound I-70 and northbound I-55.
This shutdown is expected to end by 7 a.m. Monday.
