Aria Wischmeyer, 2, from St. Louis, had a closer encounter with a bald eagle than she expected on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at the Audubon Center at Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton during Birds of Winter Eagle Sundays. She didn't need binoculars when the eagle, named Emrys, gave her a much closer look. Emrys is tethered with leather straps so he couldn't get too much closer. Emrys comes from the Tree House Wildlife Center in Dow, Ill. The nearly mature eagle is a permanent resident due to a broken wing caused by a collision with a car near Sparta, Ill.
