U.S. should provide its share to fund that fights diseases

I agree with Sahana Madala’s letter "U.S. should continue contributing money to fight AIDS" (Dec. 7). Continuing to provide our share for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is both morally and strategically the right thing for our country to do.

When Congress grants funding that allows our country to show up as a major leader in global health, it shows the best of our American traditions to help others and protect our own people from harm. Yet such generosity to combat the worst diseases of poverty abroad also has the effect of publicly demonstrating how we can stand together with our allies. This kind of “soft power” in global partnerships helps hold relationships together as we unite against diseases that are a threat to us all.

Our representatives (William Lacy Clay, Ann Wagner and Blaine Luetkemeyer) and our senators (Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley) should act to maintain our support of the Global Fund next year.
