A March 29 Post-Dispatch editorial, “Trump’s impulsiveness in North Korea sows chaos, confusion and danger,” shows President Donald Trump’s chaotic approach toward foreign policy.
An additional example of the shortsighted view of the Trump administration is the proposal to slash the foreign aid budget, which includes life-saving programs such as the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
Foreign aid programs promote stability worldwide, while also reducing conflict. In 2017, a similar proposal to cut foreign aid programs was made but 120 retired generals and admirals responded by saying that developmental aid is “critical to preventing conflicts and reducing the need to put our men and women in uniform in harm’s way.”
I thank St. Louis-area U.S. Reps. Ann Wagner, William Lacy Clay and Emanuel Cleaver for their bipartisan support for the Global Fund. I urge our Missouri senators, Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley, to also support funding the Global Fund in the 2020 appropriations bill.
