Protect food assistance by supporting bipartisan farm bill

As we approach back-to-school time, there are many children across the state who are looking forward to school. That's because it's a time where they will get food again.

I know students of mine who went at least a month over the summer without knowing where any of their food was coming from. When they go back to school, they have the comfort of one to two meals per day.

However, the House’s partisan farm bill puts that in jeopardy. It would take food assistance away from millions of Americans through harsh time limits, reduced state flexibility and punitive barriers such as permanently banning people who’ve been incarcerated from receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The Senate version is a bipartisan effort to protect our important program and protect my students’ meals. I call on Reps. Ann Wagner and William Lacy Clay, and Sens. Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, to support a bipartisan farm bill that does not take away the ability of my students — and other students across Missouri — to get breakfast and lunch.
