The main focus for many seniors during this current outbreak is to prevent getting sick. “With all of the swift changes being put into place to slow the spread of Coronavirus, many seniors are going on lockdown and are practicing social isolation, which I fully support,” states Dr. Beth Templin, a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy.
The big problem with this, is that in order to protect themselves from being exposed to the virus, they are at risk for becoming weak and losing their independence, especially if the recommended isolation lasts more than a few weeks. Dr. Templin, the owner of HouseFit explains, “losing your strength is an indicator of mortality in our seniors. It leads to loss of independence and a higher risk of falls.”
With many seniors losing access to their current gyms and exercise classes, they are also losing the support and ability to stay active. That’s where HouseFit comes in. “In order to help prevent what we consider to be the bigger problem of so many of our folks getting weak while they are confined to their homes, we are offering online solutions.” HouseFit is rolling out online exercise classes specifically designed for aging adults as well as online educational workshops, telehealth options and nutritional programs to help support the community.
“Especially in this time of limited access, we need to shift our thinking to being proactive and preventative,” says Templin. “We need to create more access and better ways to help support our seniors through these uncertain times. We can do better. We need to do better.”
Prevention is essential at this point. It is much better than the alternative of not staying active and as a result losing independence. “Many of our current clients had been very active and involved in the community. This current situation will significantly limit their ability to get out and move and we’re here to support them.”
HouseFit if offering 2 weeks free of their online classes to seniors. They are dedicated to helping adults 55+ maximize their independence and fitness levels, so they can continue to enjoy a full and active life.
