FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
St. Louis’ Blues City Athletics team and Masters Athlete, Matt Dettmann make it to the final stage of the 2021 NoBull CrossFit Games® in Madison, WI.
St. Louis, MO—This Blues City Athletics (BCA), a local gym offering personal training, youth and CrossFit classes has had some standout athletes competing on the global CrossFit stage. Most recently and notably, Masters athlete Matt Dettmann and the BCA team of four have punched their ticket to the global competition: the CrossFit Games, where the fittest man, woman and team will be determined.
The team is composed of BCA gym owner Stephen Wallace (30), along with three other athletes: Taylor Streid (30); Marrah Sanders (27); and Chris Harbison (37), are now preparing to take on the CrossFit Games in Madison, WI at the end of the month. The team’s coach, Matt Dettmann (48), who ranks 20th in North America, has also qualified for the Masters division of the individual male competition.
Serving as the semi-final qualifier for the 2021 NoBull CrossFit Games® 30 Women, 30 Men, and 20 Teams from North America competed on the West Coast Classic competition floor for one of the five coveted spots to go to the CrossFit Games. Team Blues City Athletics placed fifth in the competition, securing their spot at the Games.
Team competition highlights from the West Coast Classic:
After competitive placements in the first two workouts on day one, and an impressive second-place finish in a 6k ruck run the morning of day two, Team Blues City Athletics went into events four and five on Saturday tied for first place. During the fourth event: clean and jerk for load, Stephen Wallace lifted an outstanding 385 pounds, which was the most of any athlete of the weekend and was only 2 pounds away from the CrossFit competition clean and jerk record of 387.
“Honestly, after the morning ruck run, I questioned if I could make that lift. But we took the morning to recover and by the time I went through my warm-up, I knew I could do it. What was really cool was hitting that and then seeing Chris hit a big lift for him, and then Taylor and Marrah put up their own record numbers. So like, yeah, I hit a big lift, but so did every member of our team,” said Wallace.
Sitting in third place, Sunday opened with a challenging workout for the team: one rooted in heavy deadlifts, a movement that can flare up a previous injury for Harbison. But pushing through this adversity, Harbinson and the team finished the event, maintaining a fifth-place position overall. The last workout for the weekend involved handstand pushups and a team lunge-walk of a 405lb sandbag worm. The team annihilated the worm work, passing competitors up and down the floor during the lunge. By only .5 of a second, the BCA team maintained their fifth-place position, officially qualifying for the 2021 NoBull CrossFit Games®.
“CrossFit is a very unique sport, and there’s an added level of complexity as a team. In most cases you have to be completely in synch - both in our movements and mentality. At the West Coast Classic, we weren’t necessarily the strongest, fastest, or most fit, but our ability to work as a team throughout the weekend shined repetitively, helping us qualify for the CrossFit Games. We have been working extremely hard and are excited to go up to Madison and compete against the top competition in the world.” said Streid.
Streid is a veteran Games athlete who has participated in the competition every year since 2014, and has ranked in the top 100 worldwide since 2017. She is currently ranked 60th in North America. Streid is a full-time Physical Therapist for St. Louis-based Athletico, and is one of only a few in the top 100 who juggles a full-time career alongside the sport.
The team and Dettmann are working to prepare for the 2021 NoBull CrossFit Games® at the end of the month. Currently, they spend nearly every day training, with at least three or four team-specific workouts. These weeks are focused on unique movements that have historically made an appearance at the games (i.e. ring handstand pushups and pegboard climbs) or are based on hints about workouts shared by CrossFit’s Dave Castro and CrossFit HQ.
“The weeks between the semi-finals and the games are when we go head down and focus on tying up the loose ends, so that we feel confident in ourselves when we step onto the competition floor. Our skill is there, now it’s just fine-tuning,” said Dettmann, athlete and team coach.
Dettmann and the team are available for interviews and the media is invited to attend and experience CrossFit Games training first-hand. Please alert media contact: Sam Agusti-Nuernberger, information below, if you would like to attend a training session.
