WUCT is a chemistry competition for high school students, created and managed by a group of undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). Last year, the tournament drew in over 200 high school students from across the United States to WashU’s Danforth Campus for a day of challenging and collaborative applications of their classroom knowledge to a competitive arena. Teams of six students can expect to compete in a series of individual, topical, group, and head-to-head rounds of exams throughout the day. The topics round will consist of the following: Chemistry of Movies/Television, Chemistry of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), and Chemistry of Farming. At the end of the day, students will attend an awards ceremony where the top individual and team performances will be rewarded. Throughout the day, there will be activities for students and coaches to participate in. These will be announced as the competition day nears.

Founded on the idea that classroom learning is most effective when applied to a new and challenging environment, WUCT aims to create an atmosphere that emphasizes problem-solving and teamwork skills that are crucial for success in the professional world. On a broader level, WUCT’s goal is to foster an interest in chemistry among high school students and to improve methods of STEM education for schools.
