MLB notes: Mets' Harvey to be sidelined several weeks

  • 0

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will be sidelined for several weeks with a stress injury to the scapula bone in the right shoulder, the latest injury to a career already slowed by Tommy John surgery and a Thoracic Outlet Syndrome operation.

The injury-ravaged Mets also placed second baseman Neil Walker on the 10-day disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring. He was replaced by infielder Gavin Cecchini, who was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Harvey is expected to go on the DL Friday. The Mets, reticent to be precise with outlooks of injured players, said only that Harvey and Walker are expected to miss “several weeks.”

Jurrjens suspended 80 games • Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jair Jurrjens, a veteran of eight major league seasons and an All-Star with Atlanta in 2011, was suspended for 80 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a positive test for Testosterone that did not originate in his body. The 31-year-old righthander is 4-3 with a 4.64 ERA in 10 starts and one relief appearances this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Astros sign Cuban pitcher • The Astros have agreed to a minor league contract with 20-year-old Cuban righthander Elian Rodriguez that includes a $1.9 million signing bonus. The deal was announced Thursday, the last day of the 2016-17 signing period.

Season over for Thornburg • The Red Sox say reliever Tyler Thornburg will have season-ending right shoulder surgery. Boston says the righthander will be treated in St. Louis for thoracic outlet syndrome. The condition results from the compression of nerves or blood vessels between the neck and the armpit.

Sabathia on DL • CC Sabathia went on the 10-day disabled list after the Yankees lefthander was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain that could sideline him for at least four weeks. And first baseman Greg Bird suffered a setback in his rehab from a bone bruise in his right ankle and will be examined by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Friday.

A’s fire pitching coach • Pitching coach Curt Young has been fired by Oakland and bullpen coach Scott Emerson was promoted to the position. Young spent two stints with the club and currently was in his sixth season back with the A’s after previously serving as pitching coach from 2004-10. He was Boston’s pitching coach in 2011.

Irvings hired as arbitrator • A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Mark Irvings has been picked to replace Fredric Horowitz as Major League Baseball’s independent arbitrator.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because Irvings’ hiring was not announced by MLB or the Major League Baseball Players Association, which jointly made the decision.

Twins to honor Prince • The Minnesota Twins will be honoring Minneapolis icon Prince during a game with the Cleveland Indians. “Prince Night” is scheduled Friday at Target Field. The first 10,000 fans at the stadium will receive limited edition “Purple Rain” umbrellas. Twins players will wear special Prince-themed T-shirts during batting practice.
