TAMPA, Fla. • Signed during spring training to help the Cardinals cover shortstop after an injury to All-Star Jhonny Peralta, Ruben Tejada will now open the season on the disabled list with a quadriceps strain.

Tejada left Thursday's game after the second inning with an injury in his left leg, and he will head for an MRI of the area on Friday in Pittsburgh.

To take Tejada's spot on the opening day roster, the Cardinals notified Jeremy Hazelbaker after Thursday's game that he had made the team. Hazelbaker went two-for-three with a home run in the 9-1 victory at Steinbrenner Field, and his all-around spring earned him the ticket to Pittsburgh. He came to the ballpark Thursday unsure -- packed to go to Pittsburgh, but prepared to take a bus back to Jupiter, Fla., and Class AAA.

Hazelbaker had spent 751 games in the minors and as recently as last spring had been released by the Dodgers. This weekend will be his first day in the majors.

Greg Garcia also made the opening day roster.

He and Jedd Gyorko will be the shortstops the Cardinals turn to at the beginning of the season. Gyorko will likely start Sunday, Matheny said.

He invoked the mantra of last season: "Next man up, right?"

Tejada downplayed the severity of the injury, though he said he needed more time to know how painful it would be. He felt a cramp while running out a groundball in the second inning.

Before the acquistion of Tejada midway through spring training, Gyorko worked out at the position and became comfortable with it. Gyorko has moved into shortstop to close the game against the Yankees on Thursday.

Here is the Cardinals' opening day roster, per Matheny's description:

Pitchers (12): RHP Adam Wainwright, RHP Michael Wacha, RHP Mike Leake, LHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Carlos Martinez, RHP Trevor Rosenthal, LHP Kevin Siegrist, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jonathan Broxton, RHP Matt Bowman, RHP Seung Hwan Oh, LHP Tyler Lyons.

Catchers (2): Yadier Molina, Brayan Pena

Infielders (5): 1B Matt Adams, 2B Kolten Wong, UT Jedd Gyorko, UT Greg Garcia, 3B Matt Carpenter

Outfielders (6): LF Matt Holliday, CF Randal Grichuk, RF Stephen Piscotty, OF Brandon Moss, OF Tommy Pham, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker

Disabled List: SS Ruben Tejada, RHP Jordan Walden, SS Jhonny Peralta, RHP Lance Lynn, RHP Mitch Harris

The Cardinals will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Hazelbaker, but that can easily be done by moving Lynn (elbow surgery) to the 60-day disabled list.
